Registering on AusTender: notification profiles, approaches to market, panels and planned procurements
AusTender is the Australian Government's procurement system: every open approach to market, every standing offer or panel and every contract notice above the reporting threshold is published there, and the annual procurement plans and planned procurements are there too. Registration is free and is what unlocks document downloads, addenda notices and lodgement; a notification profile by category, keyword and location sends the new approaches to your inbox, and a watch list follows the planned ones.

What registration gets you
Anyone can browse AusTender. A registered user can download tender documents, receives addenda notices for the approaches whose documents they downloaded, can lodge responses online, can set a notification profile, and can add planned procurements to a watch list. Register the business once, with a monitored inbox, and add the people who need access.
The notices, by name
Three kinds of record, each with its own identifier:
- An approach to market (ATM) is an open invitation: a request for tender, a request for quote, an expression of interest or a request for information, with its documents, its questions deadline and its closing time in Canberra time.
- A standing offer notice (SON) records a panel or standing offer arrangement: the suppliers on it, its categories and its term. Agencies buy from a panel without an open tender, so a panel's establishment or refresh is the tender to watch for in that category.
- A contract notice (CN) records an awarded contract above the reporting threshold: agency, supplier and ABN, value, dates, category and procurement method, with amendments as further notices. The guide on reading contract notices covers the fields.
The notification profile
Set the profile by category codes (the UNSPSC groups the notices use), keywords and location, and revisit it when your services change. A profile that is too narrow misses the approach published under a neighbouring category; one that is too broad trains you to ignore the emails. Add the categories of the panels you would want to join, because the refresh of a panel arrives as an approach to market.
Planned procurements and annual plans
Agencies publish annual procurement plans and planned procurements on AusTender ahead of the approach. Read the plans for your category each year and watch-list the entries that fit; the approach, when it comes, then has a bid team already prepared. The Commonwealth Procurement Rules set the thresholds and timeframes for reporting; the current figures are in the rules themselves on the Department of Finance's site.
