Barry & Dave · Episode 8

The Other Eighty

Barry had the sharpest price in the district and the best loader on the job, and still lost a council civil works package to a dearer bloke. Dave wants to know what price was actually worth.

Most council and government tenders are scored on a weighting, and price is often a minority of it. The rest goes to things like methodology, past performance, safety systems, capability and local benefit. A sharp price and a good machine can win twenty per cent of the score and lose the other eighty by default, because the response never answered the questions the evaluators were actually asking.

The trouble is that the non-price section takes the longest to write and usually gets started last. If the tender is found a few days before close, the price gets done and the rest gets a photo of the loader.

Helm Tender brings Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council and federal tenders into one feed, with a daily digest of the ones that fit your business on Tracker and up and a weekly digest on the free Watcher plan, so the eighty gets the time it needs.

What they say

Barry: G'day, I'm Barry.

Dave: And I'm Dave.

Barry: Council civil works package. Sharpest price in the district.

Dave: And?

Barry: Best loader on the job. Lost to a dearer bloke.

Dave: How much dearer?

Barry: Twelve per cent.

Dave: What was price worth?

Barry: Twenty per cent of the score.

Dave: And the other eighty?

Barry: ...I sent them a photo of the loader.

Dave: My old way bid the machine too.

Barry: What changed?

Dave: I write the eighty first now.

Dave: Mine's Helm Tender. Drafts the eighty from our own past work.

Barry: And these?

Dave: What it couldn't source. Mine to confirm.

Barry: Would it mention my loader?

Dave: It'd ask you to confirm the loader.
